Project 116 preparations
Many of you reading the previous blog asked about the preparations. Yes it took a lot of preparations and a lot of time to make this community mosaic event happen. The idea to turn one of my first impressions of Beijing into a mosaic lingered in my head already for more than one year. Meeting Thomas Denker at the joined BAMM (British Association of Mosaic Artists ) And DOMO e.V. (Deutsche Organisation für Mosaikkunst) in York 2019 and getting to know his very interesting computer generated photo mosaics, gave me the idea to try and use this technique for a mosaic produced by a team. After a few playful trials during spring 2020 it turned November when I seriously started to develop the designs with my assistant Zhu Shui. She helped with her photoshop skills to make the photo collage – a caricature of a typical Beijing scooter set in front of a landmark building in Beijing, the Wanjing SoHo. Project 116 – community mosaic&food
Yesterday, Saturday Feb 27 was a true example of team work: during two hours 21 participants were silently (to bring out the meditative qualities that mosaic laying has) working in the sacred mosaic moments studio each on one segment of a mosaic. Interesting how different the approach of participants was to make their segment. Some went row by row, some by color in their material box. Over a delicious lunch cooked during the period of mosaic making by 3 participants under the instructions of snack chef Martin, the hungry mosaic makers were refueling their energies and need to talk. It was a happy buzzing lunch break after 2 hours of silence. Coming back to the studio after lunch was full of suspense – the image wasn’t revealed to participants before – What would it be? Each participant brought their segment to the front and I temporarily mounted the 18 segments together on an Aluminium honeycomb board. This was a great moment of joy.
